Arterial Blood Gas Interpretation

Educational tool for structured interpretation of pH, PaO₂, PaCO₂, HCO₃⁻, lactate and PaO₂/FiO₂ ratio, with explicit acid-base type, severity and compensation status. Acid-base and oxygenation interpretation.

ABG acid-base + oxygenation

Enter ABG values

Use mmHg for PaO₂ and PaCO₂. Lactate is in mmol/L. FiO₂ can be entered as 21 or 0.21.

Reference ranges and rules used by this tool

pH7.35–7.45. pH <7.35 = acidemia; pH >7.45 = alkalemia.
Acidemia severityMild 7.30–7.34; moderate 7.20–7.29; severe <7.20.
PaCO₂35–45 mmHg. High PaCO₂ acidifies; low PaCO₂ alkalinises.
HCO₃⁻22–26 mmol/L. Low HCO₃⁻ acidifies; high HCO₃⁻ alkalinises.
PaO₂≥80 mmHg on room air is usually acceptable; interpret with age and FiO₂.
PaO₂/FiO₂>300 usually acceptable; ≤300 impaired oxygenation.
Lactate<2 mmol/L usually not elevated; ≥4 mmol/L high-risk hyperlactatemia.
CompensationExpected compensation helps identify simple versus mixed acid-base disorders.

This application supports education and rapid structuring of ABG interpretation. It does not replace clinical judgement, local laboratory ranges, full electrolyte evaluation, anion gap calculation, delta gap calculation, imaging or assessment of the patient’s clinical context.
